San Jose Sharks' forward Joe Thornton will have surgery on what was revealed to be a torn ACL and MCL that the 37-year-old was playing through in the team's series loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

Thornton missed the first two games of the Sharks' series with a lower body injury, but returned for Games 3 through 6 and recorded two assists. However, his valiant effort to return to the lineup wasn't enough as the 2016 Clarence S. Campbell winners lost Game 6, 3-1 on Saturday and were eliminated by Connor McDavid and the Oilers.

The 19-year veteran is at the end of a three-year, $20.25 million contract and is now an unrestricted free agent. He finished the regular season with seven goals and 43 assists in 79 games played.
