{allcanada} Oscar Nominations: ‘La La Land’ Ties Record With 14 Noms; ‘Arrival’ & ‘Moonlight’ Snag 8 Apiece

After a consistent run through awards season almost from the beginning, Lionsgate's La La Land swept through nominations this morning for the 89th Oscars. Damien Chazelle's musical, which went 7-for-7 at the Golden Globes last week, scored an Oscar-record-tying 14 nominations, matching the feat of only two other films: 1950's All About Eve and James Cameron's Titanic in 1997.

The pic scored in all major categories, including for writer-director Chazelle, leads Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, and an Original Score and two Original Song noms for Justin Hurwitz. It marked a noms that featured a record six noms for black actors, as changes to the structure of organizer the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since last year's diversity controversy seem to have taken root.

Joining it on the Best Picture list: Paramount's Arrival and Fences, Lionsgate's Hacksaw Ridge and Hell Or High Water (the latter a co-release with CBS Films; Lionsgate scored a day's-best 26 noms overall), 20th Century Fox's Hidden Figures, The Weinstein Company's Lion, Amazon/Roadside's Manchester By The Sea and A24's Moonlight.

The noms were unveiled in a new-fangled, pre-packaged series of videos this morning in a global live stream by the Academy.

Moonlight, along with Manchester, had been the other most consistent in-season regulars since the awards push began back at the early fall festivals (or even January 2016, if you count Manchester's world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival). Barry Jenkins' drama picked up eight noms, tied with Arrival, the latter a departure for the Academy which rarely finds favor with sci-fi fare outside the technical categories. Both pics scored for Director (Jenkins for Moonlight, Denis Villeneuve for Arrival) and for Adapted Screenplay (Jenkins again, and Eric Heisserer).

Arrival's haul did not include a Best Actress nod for star Amy Adams, who had been doing well among especially critics groups this season. The category did however include Meryl Streep for Paramount's Florence Foster Jenkins, her 20th Oscar nom. She joins a strong group that includes Loving's Ruth Negga, La La Land's Stone, Natalie Portman for Jackie and Isabelle Huppert for Elle (after Paul Verhoeven's drama was left off the Academy's Foreign Language shortlist). Deadline's Pete Hammond, who will weigh in later, said Best Actress was the toughest category to crack this year.

The Weinstein Company's Lion, Manchester and Lionsgate's Hacksaw Ridge scored six noms apiece, with the latter's haul including a Best Director slot for Mel Gibson, who won the category in 1996 for Braveheart and is back with his first helming effort in 10 years. Also nommed: Hacksaw lead actor Andrew Garfield, who joins a list featuring La La Land's Gosling, likely frontrunner Casey Affleck of Manchester, Viggo Mortensen for Bleecker Street's Captain Fantastic, and Denzel Washington who nominated along with Supporting Actress Viola Davis for August Wilson's adaptation but left of the directing list.

Meanwhile, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda is officially up for the rare EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) shot, with an Original Song nom for Disney's Moana, which also scored an Animated Feature nom.
