{allcanada} Jan. 25: Outdoor hockey in Los Angeles

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Jan. 25

2014: Outdoor hockey in a warm-weather setting becomes a reality for the first time when the Anaheim Ducks defeat the Los Angeles Kings 3-0 before a crowd of 54,099 at Dodger Stadium.

On a pristine Southern California evening, the opening act is emceed by two Hall of Fame broadcasters: Vin Scully of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Bob Miller of the Kings. After that, the night belongs to the Ducks and especially goaltender Jonas Hiller, who makes 36 saves, one of them on a first-period penalty shot by Kings center Anze Kopitar. Anaheim gets early goals by Corey Perry and Matt Beleskey, and Hiller does the rest until Andrew Cogliano hit the empty net with 1:29 remaining.

"The energy was fabulous," said Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau, who's hoarse from trying to scream orders at his players over the noise made by the full house. "I can't even talk now because players couldn't hear me five feet from me when I was trying to tell them who was up."
