Michael Saunders has yet to sign with a team for the 2017 season, but still plans to play for Canada at the 2017 World Baseball Classic, according to MLB.com's Jon Morosi.
Saunders, a native of Victoria, BC, played last season with the Toronto Blue Jays, hitting .253 with 24 home runs and 57 RBIs. He also posted a .338 on-base percentage and a .478 slugging percentage. Saunders was named an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2016, but his play dropped off considerably in the second half of the season.
The 30-year-old is currently a free-agent.
Fellow teammate and Canadian, catcher Russell Martin, has also committed to play for his country at the WBC.
The tournament begins March 6, 2017.
