After making a huge donation of $185,074 to the Edmonton Food Bank for a five-ton refrigerated truck over the summer, it was time for the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation to load it up with donations to help feed those in need.
The contributions didn't come from a food drive, however. They were the leftovers from Rogers Place concession stands. The foundation has been working with the Rock and Wrap It Up! program since 2010 and donated more than 40,000 pounds of food (that became 35,000 meals) from its concession stands at Rexall Place before continuing the program from the Oilers' new home.
Rock and Wrap It Up! works with sports and entertainment venues to take food that's been prepared, but not served, and give it to food banks instead of throwing it away. About 40 percent of the people Edmonton's Food Bank feeds are children, according to a spokesperson.
"As much as we try to have a waste minimization program, you still have leftovers and in the past, a lot of it would just go in the garbage. This program provides us with the opportunity to not only minimize waste, but to help our community," said Tom Cornwall, Oilers Entertainment Group Vice President of Facilities and Operations.
This first shipment included teriyaki chicken, roast beef, steamed rice and vegetables and salads. The Oilers plan to make donations of about 500 to 700 pounds of food every two to three weeks in the brand new truck, but more might be coming during the holiday season because of additional events scheduled for Rogers Place.
That's not the only food-related cause the Oilers are getting behind. The foundation also announced a $750,000 donation to E4C's School Snack Program. The money will be used to help feed 6,000 elementary school students in 26 schools in Edmonton over the next three years.
