{allcanada} Connor McDavid would be honored to be Oilers captain

It sounds like Connor McDavid is ready to be captain of the Edmonton Oilers, even if he isn't publicly campaigning for the role.

"Obviously. If I was ever the captain at any point I think it would be one of the greatest honors and one of the accomplishments that I would definitely take the most seriously," McDavid told the Toronto Sun on Sunday.

McDavid, 19, was in Toronto for the Sportsnet Ball Hockey Challenge, an event that brought together NHL and tennis players in advance of the Association of Tennis Professionals' Rogers Cup tournament, which begins Monday.

McDavid, who was selected by Edmonton with the No. 1 pick at the 2015 NHL Draft, had 48 points (16 goals, 32 assists) in 45 games as a rookie and was a finalist for the Calder Trophy.

The Oilers did not have a captain last season.

"I don't want to comment on it too much, but obviously it would be an unbelievable feeling," McDavid told the newspaper.

Forward Jordan Eberle, who has played six seasons with the Oilers and was one of their four alternate captains in 2015-16, said Thursday that he thinks Edmonton could play another season without a captain.

"I think you see a lot of teams going toward not having a captain," Eberle told Sportsnet 590 The Fan. "I'm a strong believer in guys that lead by example. I've played with Connor and he's an exceptional player and I think he'll be the future of hockey. It doesn't matter if he has [the captaincy], or I have it, you just want a collective group of leaders. I think we do in Edmonton.

"Ultimately, one day, I think he will be our leader."
