{allcanada} Blue Jays acquire Upton Jr. from Padres

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. from San Diego Padres in exchange for Class A pitching prospect Hansel Rodriguez.

Upton, 31, has appeared in 92 games during the 2016 season for the Padres and has 16 homers and 45 RBI with a .256 average and .304 on base percentage.

The Blue Jays confirmed the deal on Tuesday via Twitter.

The 2002 first round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays is in his second season with the Padres after spending two years with the Atlanta Braves.

Upton made his debut with the Rays in 2004 and played with his original franchise through the 2012 season.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, Upton Jr. is owed what remains  of $15.45 million this season and another $16.45 million next season. Joy Heyman of MLB Network reports the Padres are expected to pay "a lot" of the roughly $22 million Upton Jr. is still owed - the Jays did receive cash considerations in the deal.

Rodriguez, 29, is currently playing with the Bluefield Blue Jays of the Appalachian League. He owns a 2-1 record and a 3.06 ERA in six starts.

The right-handed pitcher was signed by Blue Jays in January 2014. Rodriguez was listed as the team's 18th rated prospect by MLB.com.
