{allcanada} Etem signs one-year contract with Canucks

Forward Emerson Etem signed a one-year, $775,000 contract Monday to remain with the Vancouver Canucks.

Etem, 24, could have become a restricted free agent July 1.

In 58 games with Vancouver and the New York Rangers this season, Etem scored seven goals and set a new career high in points with 15, including 12 in 39 games with Vancouver. Etem was traded from the Rangers to Vancouver on Jan. 8 for forward Nicklas Jensen and a sixth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.

"Emerson is a hard-working, 24-year-old who supports our plan to build a young, fast, high-character team," general manager Jim Benning told the Canucks' website. "HIs speed will help us compete next year, and he is a good role model for our first- and second-year players because of the professionalism and work ethic he brings every single day."

The Long Beach, Calif., native finished this season with points in each of Vancouver's final five games.

Etem was selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round (No. 29) of the 2010 draft. The Rangers acquired Etem and a second-round pick in the 2015 draft from Anaheim for forward Carl Hagelin and two picks.
