{allcanada} Blue Jays hopeful Tulowitzki will require minimum on disabled list

BOSTON – Troy Tulowitzki's right quadriceps strain continues improving to the point that the Toronto Blue Jays are hopeful the injured shortstop can return from the disabled list after the minimum 15 days.

Blue Jays head trainer George Poulis said Sunday that Tulowitzki feels "better and better each day" in Dunedin, Fla., where he's working out. He played catch Sunday with plans to hit off a tee Monday.

"We're not going to hold him back, that's for sure," Poulis said.

Tulowitzki sustained the quad strain stealing second base in New York on May 26. He initially attempted to play through the soreness before deciding to give his legs some rest.

"It's tough," he said after being placed on the DL. "You could rest it and maybe get better in a week or so. But then you've got to play with a man down and that's not the right thing to do."

The 31-year-old has a .204 average, eight home runs and a .673 OPS in 46 games this season. In the meantime, Darwin Barney has been filling in admirably at shortstop.

Tulowitzki would be eligible to return to action in one week, on June 12, if all goes well from here.

"There's a chance. That's what we hope for," Poulis said.

Meanwhile, other injured Blue Jays continue making progress from their respective injuries...

CECIL THROWING
While there's no clear timeline for
Brett Cecil's return, his torn lat has improved to the point that he can throw from 90 feet.

"(He's) feeling really good. Really anxious to get going," Poulis said. "We're keeping him in his lane, not rushing things because we want to make sure that lat's feeling good. He's doing really good. We're really optimistic."

Once Cecil starts throwing bullpen sessions the Blue Jays will be able to establish a firm timeline for his return.

MORALES ON A MOUND
Franklin Morales, who has been sidelined with shoulder soreness since April 6, has progressed to the point that he's throwing some "very light" bullpens, Poulis said. The left-hander will require several more bullpens before starting a rehab stint.

Still, it's clear the Blue Jays can't count on Morales and that the $2 million salary he earns has essentially become a sunk cost. Should the Blue Jays require additional space on the 40-man roster they could move Morales to the 60-day disabled list.

INJURY NOTES

  • Max Pentecost continues working on a throwing program to build up arm strength, Poulis said. The 2014 first round pick has been the designated hitter at Class A Lansing, where he has a .263 batting average and a .630 OPS in 22 games.
  • The neck soreness that affected Russell Martin early in the season has subsided, Poulis said. "He's been doing good. Just like any human being you sleep funny sometimes ... but nothing that holds you back."
