RED WINGS (39-28-11) AT MAPLE LEAFS (28-38-11)
TV: 8 p.m. ET: NHLN, CBC, CITY
Season series: The Detroit Red Wings won their first two games against the Toronto Maple Leafs before losing 1-0 at Joe Louis Arena on March 13. Forward Justin Abdelkader has three goals and four points to lead the Red Wings. Jonathan Bernier made 38 saves in Toronto's victory.
Red Wings team scope: Detroit moved into a tie in points with the Philadelphia Flyers and stayed one behind the Boston Bruins by defeating the Minnesota Wild 3-2 at Joe Louis Arena on Friday. The Red Wings are chasing the Bruins for third in the Atlantic Division and the Flyers for the final wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the Eastern Conference. The Red Wings and Bruins each have four games remaining; the Flyers have six. "I think for the last few years, this is the way it's been," forward Gustav Nyquist told the Red Wings' website. "We've had to battle our way into the playoffs, and it's no different this year. We know we control our own fate." Detroit, which is trying to qualify for the playoffs for the 25th straight season, has a back-to-back next week; the Red Wings are home against the Flyers on Wednesday and at Boston on Thursday. Jimmy Howard made 20 saves against the Wild, but coach Jeff Blashill didn't say who will play against Toronto. Petr Mrazek has been pulled in three of his past four starts.
Maple Leafs team scope: Mike Babcock spent 10 years coaching the Red Wings before joining Toronto last spring, but he wouldn't mind seeing his old team advance to the postseason. "The Detroit factor, I'd like them to get in the playoffs," Babcock told the Maple Leafs' website after practice Friday. "Why? Because I was there a long time and I appreciate the people there. So that doesn't play any into [anything]. What does, though, is that we're playing hockey and we're trying to improve our group all the time." Toronto might be without forward Milan Michalek, who was injured in a 4-1 loss at the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. Michalek missed practice with an undisclosed injury and was being re-evaluated, according to Babcock. Forward Peter Holland (concussion), who wore a non-contact jersey in practice, might miss his eighth straight game. Bernier is expected to start.
