THIS DATE IN NHL HISTORY, APRIL 3:
1966: The Toronto Maple Leafs use three goaltenders in a game, something never before done in the NHL, in a 3-3 tie with the Detroit Red Wings at Detroit Olympia.
Maple Leafs coach and general manager Punch Imlach always has a flair for the unusual, and he chooses his team's final game of the 1965-66 regular season to give all three of his goalies some work ahead of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Johnny Bower starts the game and stops all 10 shots he faces as the Maple Leafs build a 2-0 lead on goals by Brit Selby, a 20-year-old forward who will win the 1966 Calder Trophy, and captain George Armstrong.
For the second period, Bower gives way to fellow greybeard Terry Sawchuk (pictured). He faces eight shots and allows a goal by Norm Ullman after Toronto goes up 3-0 on a goal by Eddie Shack.
Bower moves behind the bench to coach the third period with Imlach in the stands to scout the third period. With Bruce Gamble now in goal, Val Fonteyne and Bruce MacGregor score 24 seconds apart on two of Detroit's 11 shots to earn the tie.
