BOSTON -- Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand is tied for third in the NHL with 32 goals, but he was not selected to the preliminary 16-player roster for Team Canada for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey on Wednesday.
"I think when you look at the team, there's a lot of phenomenal players on that roster," Marchand said Thursday at TD Garden, where the Bruins will play the Chicago Blackhawks (7 p.m. ET; TVA Sports, SN1, SNE, SNO, SNP, CSN-CH, NESN, NHL.TV). "And so I'm very happy for all the guys. I've obviously played with [Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin] and [Bruins center Patrice Bergeron], they're on that list and I'm very happy for both of them."
Marchand, 27, represented Canada at the IIHF World Junior Championship in 2007 and 2008. He has 148 goals in 436 NHL games. His 19 shorthanded goals are the most by any player since he entered the League in 2009-10.
This season, Marchand has played at a higher level than ever before.
"I think he's proven himself over the years, and especially this year, how good he is and how competitive he is every game," Bergeron said. "And he always makes something happen every time he's on the ice. And right now he's close to on pace for getting 40 (goals), so he's been very impressive this year and has been a huge part of helping me be a good player every night."
The Bruins are in third place in the Atlantic Division and are attempting to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs after missing it last season for the first time in eight years. So although Marchand hopes to remain under consideration for the final Team Canada roster, which must be named by June 1, he has bigger goals to focus on down the stretch of the regular season.
"I don't know. That's not up to me," he said. "I'm more concerned about playing better for this team here and being good every night for our group. And ultimately that's what matters is our team wins in this room and that's what I'm focusing on."
