Season series: The New York Islanders defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-2 at Barclays Center on Oct. 12. John Tavares had a goal and two assists and goalie Thomas Greiss made 22 saves for New York.
Islanders team scope: Coach Jack Capuano is one win shy of his 200th NHL victory; he is 199-168-53. Defenseman Johnny Boychuk practiced after he was hit in the face by a shot late in a 3-2 road win against the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday, according to Newsday. Capuano has not named a starting goaltender; Jaroslav Halak has started four of the past five games, but Greiss started at Vancouver and has won 17 of his past 25 starts. "He just battled, that's what I saw from him," Capuano told Newsday. "He's out at the top of the crease, fighting for space. He gave us a chance." Forward Casey Cizikas has a five-game point streak (two goals, three assists). The Islanders are 4-1-0 with two games remaining of a seven-game road trip.
Jets team scope: Defenseman Dustin Byfuglien has a six-game point streak (one goals, five assists). Without veterans Andrew Ladd, who was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks on Feb. 26, and Bryan Little, who will miss the remainder of the season with an upper-body injury, coach Paul Maurice plans to evaluate some of his younger players. "It's a great opportunity," Maurice said. "[Nikolaj] Ehlers and [Mark] Scheifele alone are going to play against [the Islanders'] best. Ehlers from the start of the season to now is seeing a completely different National Hockey League. It's quite a task for them, but a really great learning ground for them." Maurice has not named a starting goaltender; Ondrej Pavelec and Michael Hutchinson have alternated starts in the past three games. The Jets lost the first of a five-game homestand 3-2 to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday.
