Season series: The San Jose Sharks have defeated the Vancouver Canucks in three of four games. They won 4-1 on Feb. 28, 3-2 on March 3 and 4-1 on Tuesday, all in Vancouver. The Canucks defeated the Sharks 4-2 in San Jose on March 5. Sharks forward Logan Couture has three goals and two assists, including his first NHL hat trick on Tuesday. Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis and forward Sven Baertschi each has a goal and two assists.
Canucks team scope: Forward Jake Virtanen was suspended for two games by the NHL Department of Player Safety for interference against Sharks defenseman Roman Polak on Tuesday. Goalie Ryan Miller is expected to start. Coach Willie Desjardins has alternated Miller and Jacob Markstrom since Feb. 28, and Markstrom played in the Canucks' loss to the Sharks. The Canucks did not skate Wednesday. Forward Markus Granlund (upper body) and defensemen Nikita Tryamkin (lower body), Luca Sbisa (upper body) and Chris Tanev (undisclosed) are day-to-day. Forwards Brandon Sutter (fractured jaw) and Radim Vrbata (lower body) and defenseman Alexander Edler (fractured fibula) are out. Vancouver has lost nine in a row (0-8-1), one shy of the Canucks record (Oct. 23- Nov. 11, 1997).
Sharks team scope: San Jose did not skate Wednesday after back-to-back wins against the Los Angeles Kings and Canucks. There was no update on Polak, who went to the locker room after the incident with Virtanen in the second period but returned to finish the game. The Sharks were without forward Joel Ward (undisclosed), defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic (lower body), left wing Matt Nieto (hand) and defenseman Matt Tennyson (concussion) in Vancouver. CSNbayarea.com said the Sharks are 29-13-5 with Couture in the lineup and 14-15-1 without him when he missed 30 games because of injuries earlier this season. "We're a different team with him in the lineup. I think our record reflects that," coach Peter DeBoer said.
