Defenceman Jeff Petry will require surgery for a sports hernia injury and will miss the remainder of the regular season, the Montreal Canadiens announced Thursday.
Petry, who has been sidelined since Feb. 7, has five goals and 11 assists in 51 games this season.
The six-foot-three Michigan native was acquired by the Canadiens in March 2015. On June 2, he signed a six-year contract extension with the team worth $33 million through 2021.
The Canadiens also announced that defenceman Tom Gilbert underwent surgery on his left knee. His recovery is estimated at six months.
Gilbert, who is scheduled to be unrestricted free agent in July, appeared in just 45 games with the Canadiens this season.
