CANADIENS (28-27-5) at CAPITALS (44-10-4)
TV: 7 p.m. ET; SN, RDS, CSN-DC+, NHL.TV
Season series: Braden Holtby made 33 saves and T.J. Oshie scored the game-winner 8:17 into the third period to help the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 victory against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Dec. 3. Holtby made 29 saves, and Jason Chimera had a goal and an assist, in Washington's 3-1 win at Verizon Center on Dec. 26.
Canadiens team scope: Montreal is 9-23-2 since a 19-4-3 start and seven points out of the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference. "It doesn't matter what you're playing for," forward Brendan Gallagher told the Canadiens website. "I think you go into every game with the mindset you want to win the hockey game. That's the thing we're really trying to focus on right now, is having a winning mentality." Defenseman Nathan Beaulieu (lower body) is out after he was injured in the third period of Montreal's 2-1 shootout loss to the Nashville Predators on Monday. Defenseman Victor Bartley practiced in place of Beaulieu and will make his Canadiens debut. Defenseman Jeff Petry (lower body) practiced but will not travel. Forward Dale Weise (flu) missed the game Monday and did not practice but will travel. Defenseman Andrei Markov was given a day off after playing 25:55 against the Predators. Therrien has yet to decide on his starting goaltender.
Capitals team scope: Washington has won four straight and nine of its past 10, is 17-1-1 in its past 19 games at Verizon Center and is the first team in NHL history to win 44 of its first 58 games in one season. However, the Capitals refuse to look past any opponent. "We know that we're going to get everyone's best effort," defenseman John Carlson told MonumentalNetwork.com. "That just pushes us to work harder, do better and play better." Center Marcus Johansson (flu) was sent home Tuesday and is questionable. "We'll see where he is [Wednesday]," coach Barry Trotz said. "He'll probably skate and we'll make that decision." Forward Jay Beagle (hand fracture) practiced without wearing a non-contact jersey. Trotz said he could play next week, if not Friday or Sunday. Alex Ovechkin needs one goal to become the 10th NHL player with eight or more 40-goal seasons.
