New York Islanders captain John Tavares, who missed the past three games with an illness, will be in the lineup Thursday at the Montreal Canadiens (7:30 p.m. ET; MSG+, RDS, CITYM), coach Jack Capuano said.
The Islanders were 1-1-1 without Tavares, who has five goals and 11 points in 10 games.
"I feel pretty good," Tavares said. "It was a rough weekend for me. It sucks watching. I take a lot of pride being as durable as I can. But just the way I felt, there was just no way I could have found a way to play. Once I was able to kind of get over that flu bug on Monday afternoon, right around noon when I started to feel better, it was just starting to eat and rehydrate, get some weight back on that I'd lost and get my energy back. Every day it's been better, and waking up this morning is definitely the best I've felt.
"I weighed myself yesterday and I was about three pounds light still. I certainly had a little extra dessert last night. Feeling good and excited to get back at it."
Tavares played all 82 games last season, the fourth time in five previous seasons he played 79 or more games; in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season he played all 48 games.
"I didn't even leave my bed," Tavares said. "I had no energy. I couldn't move, I couldn't get up. It was just a lot of flu-like symptoms and I just had to let it pass."
Tavares will replace forward Steve Bernier in the lineup. Goalie Jaroslav Halak will start for the Islanders.
