Manager John Gibbons will be back with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2016.
Newly named President and CEO Mark Shapiro confirmed the news Monday during his introductory press conference. He also confirmed assistant general manager Tony LaCava will take over interim GM duties, but said it was "premature" to say if he is a candidate for the fulltime role.
Some thought Gibbons, who led the Blue Jays to their first divisional championship since 1993, would be gone after Alex Anthopoulos left the team last week.
Shapiro also mentioned there was no truth to the rumour that he scolded Anthopoulos for the prospects he gave up to acquire David Price and Troy Tulowitzki at the Trade Deadline. Shapiro, the former general manager of the Cleveland Indians, talked to Anthopoulos over a two-three day stretch, but very little of the conversation focused on the contract and said Anthopoulos was "open to anything."
Shapiro said he hasn't reached out to their free agent ace in Price or any of the players on the Jays roster, but mentioned it was important they fill out two spots in the rotation this offseason.
