Season series: The Calgary Flames won two of the three games against the Colorado Avalanche last season. Goalie Karri Ramo won two of his three starts and David Jones led Calgary with two goals and five points against Colorado. Former Avalanche forward Ryan O'Reilly led them with a goal and five points.

Flames team scope: Defenseman Dennis Wideman was given a maintenance day Monday but is expected to play against Colorado. Flames coach Bob Hartley announced Ramo will start against the Avalanche. Ramo was demoted to Stockton of the American Hockey League last week but was recalled after starter Jonas Hiller sustained an upper-body injury. In his first game back Saturday, Ramo defeated the Edmonton Oilers 5-4 in overtime. "[The] only people I have to prove is myself," Ramo told the Flames website. "I don't care what anybody else really says. It comes as motivation to me." Michael Frolik scored three goals against Edmonton to help the Flames end a four-game losing streak. "In this League if you want to make the playoffs, every game and every point is important," Frolik said. "If you want to be in that race, you need to play like everyone is the last one."

Avalanche team scope: The game against Calgary on Tuesday pits the past two Jack Adams Award winners against one another, Patrick Roy (2013-14) and Hartley (2014-15). Both teams are off to slow starts, with the Avalanche having dropped five of its past six games. "It's just a frustrating situation right now," Roy told the Avalanche website after a 4-3 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Sunday. "We're doing a lot of good things right now, but we just can't get rewarded for it." One area the Avalanche were better against the Sharks was with the man-advantage, going 2-for-4 on the power play after a 0-for-14 slump during a three-game road trip last week. Francois Beauchemin and Jarome Iginla scored with the man-advantage. Iginla's scored the 180th power-play goal of his career, surpassing Mark Messier to move into 26th on the all-time NHL power-play goals list. Colorado recalled forward Ben Street from San Antonio of the AHL on Monday. He has 12 points (three goals, nine assists) in six games for San Antonio this season.
