McDavid was going toward the Flyers' net when he was tripped up and went sliding hard into the boards. He emerged from the scrum holding his shoulder and went back to the Oilers' bench where he talked to the team's trainers. McDavid then walked gingerly to the locker room as the period ended.
Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun shared moments later that McDavid was in the hallway outside the Oilers' dressing room with his skates off and shoulder in a sling.
The team tweeted that he would not return to the game. At his post-game press conference, McLellan revealed more about the full extent of the injury.
"It was a hockey play," McLellan said in his address to the media. "Three guys got tangled up in the corner. It's unfortunate. It's an upper body injury that's going to keep him out long-term. He's dealing with the trainers and doctors right now. (General manager) Peter (Chiarelli) will tell you more in the morning, but I can tell you it's going to be long-term.
"He's disappointed he got injured. It's his rookie season and things are going pretty well and he wants to be part of the group."
McDavid, 18, has 12 points (5G, 7A) through 12 games this season and was an early contender for the Calder Trophy awarded to the league's top rookie. McLellan's timetable indicates McDavid will miss a highly anticipated match-up between the Oilers and Sidney Crosby's Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday, as well as Edmonton's game against the
