{allcanada} Chara's late goal gets Bruins past Maple Leafs

BOSTON -- Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara scored at 16:17 of the third period and goaltender Tuukka Rask made 22 saves in a 2-0 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at TD Garden on Saturday.

Bruins forward Matt Beleskey won a battle along the right boards and passed the puck back to defenseman Zach Trotman, who passed the puck to Chara at the top of the left circle where he put a slap shot past Toronto goaltender James Reimer.

Brad Marchand scored an empty-net goal for the Bruins (10-8-1). Boston has won consecutive home games for the first time this season.

Reimer, who started the second half of a back-to-back, made 35 saves for the Maple Leafs (7-10-4) and had his personal winning streak end at five games. The Leafs had won two in a row and five of their past six.

The Bruins tested Reimer often in the first period and outshot the Maple Leafs 14-7. Reimer made a right-shoulder save on a shot from between the circles by Loui Eriksson 14 minutes into the game.

Rask denied the Maple Leafs' best chance of the period at 11:15. After Bruins defenseman Colin Miller fell in the neutral zone trying to play a puck, Shawn Matthias skated into the Boston zone on a breakaway but couldn't shoot the puck past Rask's right pad.

Rask kept the game scoreless in the second when he denied another Matthias breakaway early in the period.

Jimmy Hayes nearly gave the Bruins the lead at 12:35 of the third period when he tried to stuff a rebound past Reimer's left pad. But the ruling on the ice was no goal and video review upheld the call.
