Phil Kessel has drawn the most interest of any Toronto Maple Leafs player in trade talks, president Brendan Shanahan said Thursday, according to The Canadian Press, but that doesn't mean a trade will happen prior to or during the 2015 NHL Draft, or at all.
"We're in no rush; we need to have a deal we're comfortable with," Shanahan said in comments tweeted by the Maple Leafs. "We don't feel the need to do anything knee jerk to get something done on a deadline."
Kessel has had four seasons of at least 30 goals since joining the Maple Leafs in a 2009 trade with the Boston Bruins, but they've made the Stanley Cup Playoffs once in his tenure. Toronto endured a late-season collapse in 2013-14 that cost it a playoff berth and finished with the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference this season.
The Maple Leafs hold the No. 4 pick in the draft, which begins Friday at BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla. (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVA Sports).
Although the Maple Leafs have said in the past they're willing to entertain trade talks for the pick, they figure to have some potential game-changing defensemen and forwards available to them at that position.
"Right now we're expecting to pick fourth," Shanahan said. "We think there are a few guys who could be available who we're excited about."
