Renowned Canadian author Margaret Atwood has donated a piece of writing to an innovative literacy time capsule project.
The Handmaid's Tale author has become the first novelist to hand over a manuscript to the Future Library, an archive of writing which will be kept under wraps until a publication date in 2114.
Atwood is the first of 100 authors who will contribute to the project and 100 trees have been planted outside the archive's base in Oslo, Norway to provide the paper on which the works will eventually be printed.
She says of the scheme, "This project at least believes the human race will still be around in 100 years. Future Library is bound to attract a lot of attention over the decades, as people follow the progress of the trees, note what takes up residence in and around them, and try to guess what the writers have put into their sealed boxes."
Authors will donate texts once a year.
