The 21-year-old singer, who's spent the past few months making amends for bad behavior, shared a sweet message for his mom on Mother's Day, Sunday, thanking her for helping him get back on track.
"This little 4'9" woman may not look like a mom but she is, and she's the best at it!" Bieber wrote on Instagram. In the picture, Bieber's mom Pattie Mallette, 40, is smiling brightly for a selfie, wearing a flight headset.
"This woman taught me everything I know, how to love how to be compassionate how to be strong when the only thing u wanna be is weak how to stand when all you want to do is fall," the "Baby" singer wrote.
Mallette has stood by Bieber's side following several run-ins with the law, although she has been quick to say she doesn't approve of everything he does.
"I know who my son is and I don't always agree with every single thing that he does but I don't necessarily have to address that with everyone else," Mallette told PEOPLE in 2014. "He's my son and I have to respect he is not going to want me going around being 'that mom' talking about his behavior."
"If it wasn't for this woman lets just say I would have had a way LONGER stupid phase," Bieber wrote on his Instagram. "I love u and thank u for not giving up on me!"
The Canadian made headlines in 2014 for a string of bad behavior, but following a Comedy Central roast in March, he has been making a big effort to change the public perception of him.
"I hope people felt the sincerity in my apologies," Bieber told U.K. magazine Hero in May. "There are a lot of things that have happened in the last couple years that I'm not proud of and I feel a responsibility to my fans and to the public who believe in me to make it right … it was honest."
