The Calgary Stampeders signed international linebacker Deron Mayo to a contract extension on Monday.

Mayo started 17 games at outside linebacker for the Stamps last season and finished third on the team with 67 tackles. His total included two tackles for loss and he added two sacks, four pass knockdowns, one special-teams tackle and a team-leading two fumble recoveries.

"Deron has established himself as an excellent CFL linebacker and has become an important member of our defence," said Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. "He has the ability to play sideline to sideline and is consistently around the football."

The 26-year-old Mayo joined the Stamps in 2012 and played primarily on special teams until being called upon to start at middle linebacker in the Western Final and making 14 tackles in Calgary's victory over the BC Lions. He became a starter at outside linebacker in 2013 and finished second on the club with 57 tackles.

In 50 career regular-season contests, he has 133 tackles, including four tackles for loss, eight sacks, four fumble recoveries, six pass knockdowns, one interception and 25 special-teams tackles. He has 31 tackles in four career post-season games.

"I'd like to thank the Calgary Stampeders organization for giving me this opportunity to continue to play in Calgary," said Mayo. "I enjoy working with the coaches, staff and my teammates and am looking forward to bringing more championships to this great city."
