MONTREAL - Rookie Cameron Porter scored in extra time to lift the Montreal Impact to a 1-1 second-leg draw with Pachuca that gave them the victory in their CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday night.

Porter did well to stay onside as he took a long ball from fellow substitute Calum Mallace, took one touch and scored to send the Olympic Stadium crowd of 38, 104 into delirium.

The goal came 10 minutes after Pachuca took the lead on German Cano's goal from the penalty spot.

The teams tied the two-game aggregate goals series 3-3, but Montreal won on the away goals rule after drawing 2-2 at Pachuca in the firs leg last week.

They will face the winner of a quarter-final between D.C. United and Alajuelense in the semifinals.

The crowd booed as the Mexican side was awarded the penalty after some jostling in the area between Jurden Damm and Impact defender Laurent Ciman that sent the Pachuca player to the ground.

Cano slotted it home to give Pachuca the short-lived lead in the match and the series.

The Impact's hopes, and ticket sales, surged after the opening leg. They went with the same starting 11 for the return leg, but put Mallace on in the 65th minute and later sent Porter into the fray.

The Mexicans did not look put off at all at playing in a dome and had the better of the play through a scoreless first half.

They very nearly got a goal when a quick counter after an Evan Bush goal kick saw Hirving Lozano walk in alone on the left side and put a shot just wide.

Ignacio Piatti and Dilly Duka each had chances from the left side that were stopped by Oscar Perez, but the play of the half came in the 71st minute when Bush made a desperate slide for an improbable stop on Cano alone in front of the net.

The Impact were in their second Champions League quarter-final. They beat Santos Laguna 2-0 before 55,571 at the Big O in 2009 only to lose 5-2 in the second leg in Mexico.

The first leg of the semifinals will be played on a date between March 17 and March 19, with the second leg between April 7 and April 9.

Barring an MLS work stoppage, the Impact open league play Saturday against DC United.
