{allcanada} Zuccarello lifts Rangers past Maple Leafs

TORONTO -- The New York Rangers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 at Air Canada Centre on Tuesday.

New York (31-16-5) ended a two-game losing streak to start a four-game road trip.

Toronto (23-28-4) lost its first game since ending an 11-game losing streak with a 5-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

Mats Zuccarello broke a 4-4 tie with 5:56 remaining in the third period. His second goal of the game came on a wrist shot through a crowd from the slot.

Toronto's Nazem Kadri came close to tying the game, but his snap shot from close range with 3:01 left hit the post.

Toronto left wing Daniel Winnik made it 4-4 6:46 into the third period when his shot from behind the New York goal hit Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh and slipped past goalie Cam Talbot.

Dan Boyle gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 2:57 of the first period when he slipped into the slot, took a pass from Derick Brassard and beat Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer with a snap shot.

Zuccarello gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead at 10:37. Toronto defenseman Cody Franson turned over the puck behind his net and two passes later Zuccarello scored. Rick Nash had the first of his three assists.

New York defenseman Dan Girardi was penalized for boarding at 15:33 and six seconds later Toronto defenseman Morgan Rielly moved in from the left point to inside the faceoff circle and beat Talbot with a high wrist shot.

Kevin Hayes restored New York's two-goal lead at 1:42 of the second period when he slammed a shot past Reimer from the side of the net, but Maple Leafs defenseman Stephane Robidas scored 26 seconds later to make it 3-2 with a shot from the left point.

With Brassard off for tripping, Dominic Moore of the Rangers turned and snapped a high 30-foot high shot that fooled Reimer to make it 4-2. It was Moore's second shorthanded goal of the season.

Rielly pulled the Maple Leafs within 4-3 20 seconds into the third period when his wrist shot beat Talbot for his third goal in two games and seventh of the season.

The Rangers play at the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday; the Maple Leafs play at the New York Islanders.
