Season series: Phil Kessel scored twice, James van Riemsdyk added a goal and an assist, and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the New York Islanders 5-2 on Oct. 21. The Islanders led 2-1 entering the second period before Toronto scored four straight goals over a span of 8:49.
Maple Leafs team scope: Jonathan Bernier was the first goalie off the ice at practice, and the expected starter for Thursday, according to TSN. Forward Joffrey Lupul aggravated a knee injury and will likely miss a week, according to the team. Toronto recalled defenseman Petter Granberg from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League on Wednesday. Twice on Tuesday the Maple Leafs fell behind two goals to the New York Rangers, and after tying the game at four in the third period, gave up the game-winner with 5:56 remaining in regulation. It was Toronto's 17th loss in its past 20 games (3-16-1), and came after the Maple Leafs had just ended an 11-game losing streak (0-10-1).
Islanders team scope: Forward Colin McDonald has goals in consecutive games since his recall. New York has won three of its past four games after losing three consecutive games in regulation for the first time since Oct. 28-Nov. 1. In the final regular-season game against the Edmonton Oilers at Nassau Coliseum, the Islanders scored the lone goal in the third period and won 3-2. Despite the victory, the Islanders were critical of their play after the game. "We turned pucks over, we didn't get pucks in deep. We weren't playing fast the way we need to," Casey Cizikas, who scored the game-winner, told the Islanders' website. "It goes to show when we get away from our game, that's what happens. But we found a way to get the two points tonight and that's all that matters."
