Season series: The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 on Dec. 18. Four Hurricanes had two-point performances: defenseman Andrej Sekera (one goal, one assist), defenseman Justin Faulk (one goal, one assist), center Eric Staal (two assists) and left wing Nathan Gerbe (two assists). Carolina goalie Cam Ward made 25 saves. Captain Dion Phaneuf scored for Toronto.

Hurricanes team scope: Carolina is 5-2-1 in January. Left wing Jeff Skinner will play his 300th game Monday. Center Eric Staal has scored six goals in his past 10 games. Goalie Anton Khudobin has won four straight starts. The Hurricanes have not allowed a power-play goal since Dec. 20, a span of 13 games and 33 chances. Carolina has not scored a power-play goal in its past four games (0-for-10). Ward has lost three of his past four starts (1-2-1) and has allowed at least three goals in each of those losses. Right wing Alexander Semin was a healthy scratch Saturday and has not scored since Dec. 4.

Maple Leafs scope: Toronto did not skate Sunday, opting for a meeting and off-ice workout. The Maple Leafs are 1-7-0 in their past eight games and 1-5-0 under interim coach Peter Horachek. Toronto has scored one goal in its past four games and have not scored in the past 68:03. "What's the morale? It feels awful," Phaneuf said, according to the Toronto Sun. "Absolutely terrible. I don't know what more I can say." In a 3-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday, right wing David Clarkson, who has not scored in his past 13 games, was dropped to the fourth line. The Maple Leafs have not scored a power-play goal in their past four games, going 0-for-3 in each. Left wing James van Riemsdyk has not scored in his past four games and center Nazem Kadri does not have a point in his past five games. Right wing Phil Kessel does not have a point in his past four games. Center Daniel Winnik has two goals and two assists in his past six games. Goalie Jonathan Bernier has lost in regulation in each of his past three starts.
