Season series: The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Ottawa Senators in two of the three games last season. Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward was 1-0-1, allowing two goals in two games, making 63 saves on 65 shots. Senators forward Kyle Turris scored two goals. The Hurricanes have won six of the past eight games.

Hurricanes team scope: Carolina lost to the Vancouver Canucks 3-0 on Friday, the fifth time it was shut out this season. The Hurricanes play the Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs on the road, where they have a 4-16-1 record. "I think it's important for us tomorrow to show a little fight, to show a little response and be ready to play in Ottawa," Eric Staal told the Hurricanes website. "We didn't do a good enough job (of making plays), which is unfortunate, so we need to find a way to respond tomorrow." Carolina's power play is 0-for-7 in the past three games and hasn't scored in six of its past eight. Staal has three goals in his past five games.

Senators team scope: Ottawa is 9-5-4 at home and plays 11 of its next 14 games at Canadian Tire Centre. "I think the teams that are in the [Stanley Cup Playoffs] right now have got really good home records," goalie Craig Anderson said Thursday after the Senators defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 at home. "For us, we need to take care of business at home and put some pressure on the teams in front of us." Anderson made 25 saves and has allowed two goals or fewer in eight of his past 10 starts. Forward Bobby Ryan has five goals and five assists in his past 10 games. Defenseman Chris Phillips and forward Colin Greening were each a healthy scratch Thursday.
