National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation / Home Alone
Star Trek veteran William Shatner is using crowdfunding to help him publish a book explaining the mysteries of modern technology.
The actor has launched a campaign on Kickstarter.com to fund his latest project, a guide named Catch Me Up, which helps the older generation get to grips with smartphones, email and the Internet.
Catch Me Up tells stories of real people who have changed their lives by learning new skills.
In a post on the site, Shatner writes, "People over 50 have been pretty beat up lately with downsizing, a slumping economy, and so many changes in the way things work. That's why I wrote this new book Catch Me Up and I need your help to get it to the people who need it most... Until just recently I hated new technology. My 'smart' phone made me feel stupid. My grandkids had to show me how to use Facebook. I even refused to have an email account. You know what I found out? Without this know-how, I was becoming irrelevant.."
Those who donate money will receive an array of benefits ranging from a mention on the book's website for a $1 pledge to a table at Shatner's annual charity gala for a $10,000 contribution.
The campaign, which ends in January, aims to raise $50,000. It had brought in $23,000 as WENN went to press.
