Season series: The Montreal Canadiens defeated the New York Rangers 3-1 on Oct. 25 at Bell Centre. Carey Price made 35 saves to improve to 9-5-1 with a .937 save percentage and a 1.99 goals-against average against the Rangers. In the most recent game at Madison Square Garden, the Rangers defeated the Canadiens 1-0 in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference final to advance to the Stanley Cup Final.
Canadiens team scope: Montreal defeated the Boston Bruins 2-0 on Saturday for their eighth win in nine games. Price made 33 saves, and Tomas Plekanec had a goal and an assist. The Canadiens are 10-0-0 when leading after two periods. Andrei Markov scored in the first period, the first power-play goal on the road the Canadiens have scored; they had been 0-for-29. Max Pacioretty has four goals in his past six games. This is the second of three straight road games for Montreal, which does not play again until facing the Buffalo Sabres on Friday. The Canadiens are 9-3-0 on the road.
Rangers team scope: New York has not played since Wednesday, a 2-0 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers, after their game with the Buffalo Sabres on Friday was postponed because of heavy snow. Derek Stepan has five points in five games (one goal, four assists). Rick Nash (13 goals, seven assists) has a point in 14 of 19 games. The Rangers have not won two consecutive games since Oct. 19 and 21. Defenseman Ryan McDonagh has missed nine games with a separated shoulder; coach Alain Vigneault expects him to return soon. "He'll probably be joining us on our way to Tampa Bay, and I think he is close to skating with the team," Vigneault told the Rangers website after practice Saturday. Forward Lee Stempniak (back) is listed as day-to-day.
