Season series: The Calgary Flames won three of five games against the Edmonton Oilers during the 2013-14 season thanks in large part to Matt Stajan, who had a goal and five assists. That included a goal and three assists in an 8-1 win on March 22.

Flames team scope: After dropping their season opener to the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday in front of their home fans, the Flames will try to rebound in Edmonton. "It's about not getting to that position where we're down by a couple goals," captain Mark Giordano said after the 4-2 loss. "We've got to find a way to put that desperation mode on a lot earlier in the game." The Flames are starting a six-game road trip that will keep them away from Scotiabank Saddledome until Oct. 21. "Obviously, we wanted to win in front of our fans here and get a better start," forward Mikael Backlund said. "Losing is frustrating but we have a quick turnaround and we'll have to regroup and come back [Thursday]." After Jonas Hiller made 30 saves against Vancouver, the Flames are expected to use Karri Ramo in goal against the Oilers.

Oilers team scope: The Oilers will see a blend of their past, present and future as they begin their quest to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since an appearance in the Final in 2006. Edmonton is expected to dress three players taken No. 1 in their draft years; Taylor Hall (2010), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2011) and Nail Yakupov (2012). The Oilers are also expected to dress Leon Draisaitl, their 2014 first-rounder (No. 3), who made the team as an 18-year-old. "Is he going to have hiccups along the way? Absolutely. He's a teenager," coach Dallas Eakins told the Oilers website. "We're ready to help him right away and, in the end, he was better than our other options right now." The game will also celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1984 Oilers, who won the first of Edmonton's five Stanley Cups in seven years.
