Halifax’s Elsabeth Black has set a new record for Canadian women at the gymnastics world championships in Nanning, China today. Black, the only Canadian, finished in ninth place, a best-ever finish for a Canadian woman at worlds.
Before today, the highest finish was Victoria Moors’ 10th place finish at the 2013 worlds in Antwerp, Belgium, according to Gymnastics Canada.
Black placed 21st on vault, 11th on uneven bars, fifth on balance beam and eighth on floor. She will compete on Sunday in the balance beam event final, where she could challenge for a spot on the podium.
Simone Biles of the U.S. won her second consecutive all-around title with Larisa Iordache of Romania taking silver and Kyla Ross of the U.S. taking bronze.
Fans at home will have a chance to watch the Black and team Canada shine at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto next July.
Next year’s world championships will be held in Glasgow, Scotland and will serve as a qualifier for the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro.
