New York (AFP) - Another Grand Slam, another blowout for Milos Raonic and Grigor Dimitrov, the sport's young pups who should be snapping at the heels of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

There's a familiar look to the US Open, the season's final major.

With the exception of the absent Nadal, world number one Djokovic, number two Federer, Stan Wawrinka, the third-ranked player, and Andy Murray, the ninth, have all made the quarter-finals.

However, Raonic, ranked at six in the world, and number eight Dimitrov both fell in the fourth round, both still to make the final of a major.

"I'm pissed. I know I can do better. Today was proof of that. I'm not going to hide my disappointment," said 23-year-old Dimitrov after his straights sets loss to Gael Monfils, five years his senior.

Dimitrov's Grand Slam year reads quarter-final in Australia, first round defeat at the French Open and an impressive semi-final run at Wimbledon.

"I have that hunger to become better every tournament I play, even though I have lost quite a few tough matches this year. I am going to reassess everything and sort of have the whole review."

Raonic, 23, also made the semi-finals at Wimbledon, was a quarter-finalist in Paris but suffered a third round loss in Australia.

His US Open exit came at the hands of Kei Nishikori in a match which finished shortly before 2.30 am on Tuesday.

The big Canadian, whose season has yielded just a single tour title, was trying to look on the bright side.

"But then at the same time, when you're in that position, there's not really that much satisfaction from it."

- Impressive runs -

Djokovic's record at the majors this year reads quarter-finals in Australia, runner-up at the French Open followed by his second Wimbledon title.

Nadal was runner-up to Wawrinka in Melbourne, claimed a record ninth French Open before a fourth round exit at Wimbledon preceded an injury pull-out from the American hardcourt season as well as the US Open.

Federer was a semi-finalist in Australia, made the fourth round in Paris and was runner-up at Wimbledon while Murray has gone quarter-final, semi-final, quarter-final.

Just as worrying is that when it comes to the real crunch, Dimitrov and Raonic are constantly found wanting -- Dimitrov has a 1-10 record against Djokovic, Federer and Nadal while Raonic is 0-14 against the three giants.

Even the next generation following the present day next generation appreciates the enormity of the task.

Austria's Dominic Thiem, who turned 21 Wednesday, won just seven games in his fourth round loss to Tomas Berdych.

"He was simply the better player, gave me no chance. I wanted to put him under pressure, but he put me under pressure instead. He played extremely strong. And I wasn't good enough to keep pace," wrote Thiem on Facebook.

"Berdych showed me the difference between a top 50 and a top ten player. Service, return, ground strokes, footwork, speed, consistency. I have to improve all that if I want to come where he has been for many years now."
