BARRIE, Ont., Canada – J.R. Fitzpatrick is trying to pick up right where he left off following his NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 win last week in Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville.
The Cambridge, Ontario, native was in the top five in both practice sessions before turning in a fast lap of 14.220 seconds (84.304 mph) in qualifying for the Wahta Springs 300 at Barrie Speedway. The Pole Award is the first for Fitzpatrick at the .333-mile oval in nine attempts and his 15th overall.
Steve Mathews was second-fastest in the two-lap qualifying session at 14.226 seconds (84.268 mph), followed by Scott Steckly (14.264 seconds / 84.044 mph), Jason Hathaway (14.310 seconds / 83.774 mph) and Anthony Simone (14.344 seconds / 83.575 mph).
Series points leader L.P. Dumoulin qualified sixth with Jeff Lapcevich, Alex Tagliani, Joey McColm and Mark Dilley completing the top 10.
Fitzpatrick will look to improve on his career-best finish at Barrie, a third-place effort in last year's event, when the Wahta Springs 300 takes the green flag, scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
