QMI Agency retracted a story it published early Wednesday morning that Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was arrested by Ottawa police late Tuesday night on driving-related charges.
"There was no basis for the story and QMI unreservedly retracts the story in its entirety," the news agency said in a statement. "QMI regrets the error."
QMI Agency quoted sources as saying Crosby was arrested late Tuesday while driving a rented Porsche. The report said the reason for the arrest was unknown but that it appeared to be "driving related."
The Ottawa police duty desk told The Canadian Press, "It never happened," on Wednesday morning. Also, Ottawa police Chief Charles Bordeleau tweeted that the police "have had no dealings with Mr. Crosby."
The Penguins also confirmed to TSN that Crosby is in Vail, Colorado training for the start of the season. "Penguins confirm, Crosby is in Vail, Colorado training this week," tweeted TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger on Wednesday morning.
The team later released the following statement: "The Pittsburgh Penguins have spoken to Sidney Crosby. He is not in Canada, and was not in Canada yesterday. He is continuing his training in preparation for training camp."
