{allcanada} Maple Leafs extend tryout to Tallinder, Mikkelson

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defensemen Henrik Tallinder and Brendan Mikkelson to professional tryout contracts, the team announced Thursday.

Tallinder is a veteran of 678 NHL games who played last season with the Buffalo Sabres, the team that picked him in the second round (No. 48) of the 1997 NHL Draft. In 12 seasons with the Sabres and New Jersey Devils, Tallinder has 28 goals and 142 points, and two goals and 12 points in 39 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He is a two-time Olympian for Sweden and played in back-to-back Eastern Conference Finals (2006 and 2007) as a member of the Sabres.

Mikkelson played last season for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, scoring eight goals and 38 points in 73 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins affiliate. A second-round pick (No. 31) of the Anaheim Ducks in the 2005 draft, he has one goal and 10 points in 131 NHL games with the Ducks, Calgary Flames and Tampa Bay Lightning.
