Animism, an album by Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq, was named the winner of the 2014 Polaris Music Prize for best Canadian album at a Toronto gala ceremony Monday night hosted by actor Jay Baruchel.
Tagaq’s disc, with a traditional sound also influenced by electronica, industrial and metal, beat out nine other short listed Polaris nominees including Montreal band Arcade Fire’s Reflektor and Toronto rapper Drake’s Nothing Was the Same.
Animism was produced by Jesse Zubot (Dan Mangan, Fond of Tigers) with additional production by Juan Hernandez.
The Polaris Music Prize, decided by an 11 member Grand Jury of music critics from across Canada, includes a $30,000 cash award to the winner while $2,000 was given to each of the runners up – Arcade Fire, Basia Bulat, Drake, Mac DeMarco, Jessy Lanza, Owen Pallett, Shad, Timber Timbre and YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN.
