1989 - Taylor Swift / Nick & Knight - Nick Carter & Jordan Knight
There might be as much interest in the bottom of the standings as the top this season because highly touted centers Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel are available in the 2015 draft.
Some early contenders in the sweepstakes for the potential superstars:
-Buffalo Sabres: The Sabres had the NHL's worst record last season, and they are still in rebuilding mode. They will use several young players again this season. Even with their offseason acquisitions, their offense still looks below average.
-Carolina Hurricanes: The Hurricanes finished in the bottom third of the standings last season, and they didn't add much in the offseason. Now, they have lost Jordan Staal, their best defensive center, to a broken leg.
-Florida Panthers: The Panthers believe their offseason acquisitions — Dave Bolland, Jussi Jokinen, Willie Mitchell, etc. — will put them back into playoff contention. With Roberto Luongo in net for a full season, the Panthers won't give up as many goals. But their younger stars are not in the prime. The Panthers lack a high-powered offense, and their defense must prove itself.
-Edmonton Oilers: The Oilers look improved on paper, but they have to show that they can embrace a winning culture. They have missed the playoffs for eight consecutive seasons. Their goaltending has potential, but there is no lengthy track record for either Ben Scrivens or Viktor Fasth.
-Ottawa Senators: If the Senators give up as many goals as they did last season, they will be in contention for a top prospect. If they play as well defensively as they did in 2012-13, they might be in playoff contention.
