CALGARY -- The Calgary Stampeders took over first place in the CFL standings with a 28-13 win over the Edmonton Eskimos in Monday's Labour Day game.
The Stampeders top both the league and the West Division at 8-1. The Eskimos fell into a tie with the Saskatchewan Roughriders at 7-2.
Calgary extended their winning streak against their northern neighbour to 10 in a row, including three straight Labour Day games.
The Stamps also clinched the season series after a 26-22 win in Edmonton in July. In the event two clubs are tied for points in the standings at season's end, the series winner earns the higher ranking.
The Alberta rivalry continues Saturday in Edmonton in their final meeting before the playoffs.
Stampeders quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell improved to 11-1 in CFL starts. The Texan completed 18 of 29 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown throw to Anthony Parker.
Backup Drew Tate finished Calgary's scoring drive on their first possession of the game with a one-yard plunge off the snap. Running back Jon Cornish rushed for 163 yards, including 100 in the first half and a two-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Rene Paredes added an 84-yard kickoff single and field goals from 47 and 33 yards in front of an announced 35,400 at McMahon Stadium
Edmonton's Otha Foster recovered a blocked punt and ran it in for a major in the first quarter. Grant Shaw kicked field goals from 13 yards in the second quarter and from 44 yards in the fourth.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats edged the visiting Toronto Argonauts 13-12 earlier Monday in the first game played at Tim Hortons Field.
Edmonton's starting quarterback was a mystery until their offence got the ball. Mike Reilly injured his throwing hand last week in Toronto where Nichols finished off the win against the Argos.
Reilly dressed for Monday's game, but Nichols took first snaps. Reilly's run of consecutive CFL starts ended at 26. Nichols finished with 190 passing yards.
The Stamps got the ball back on their own 33 to start the fourth quarter when Edmonton's Alonzo Lawrence crashed into kicker Rob Maver while trying to block a punt.
A scrambling Mitchell dodged three tacklers to get the ball down to first and goal, where Cornish finished it off for a 24-10 lead at 5:50. Shaw and Paredes traded field goals in the final five minutes.
Calgary's defence held the visitors to 136 total yards and sacked Nichols three times in the first half. The Eskimos mustered seven first downs in the half to the Stampeders' 14.
Esks receiver A.J. Guyton dropped two consecutive Nichols throws to him in the end zone in the second quarter. Edmonton settled for Shaw's field goal and trailed by five points at halftime.
Parker's leaping grab at the goal-line produced a 27-yard touchdown catch for Calgary at 6:20.
Edmonton's Willie Jefferson got a piece of Maver's punt and Foster recovered for a 57-yard major at 7:52 of the opening quarter.
Mitchell marched Calgary to a major on their opening drive capped off by Tate at 4:43. Rene Paredes added a 84-yard kickoff single on the following play.
