GDANSK, Poland — Gordin Perrin of Creston, B.C., had 18 points as Canada defeated China in three sets (26-24, 27-25, 25-17) on Sunday to earn a fourth straight win at the world men’s volleyball championship.
“That had five-setter written all over it,” said Perrin. “It was a really good battle for us, and I’m very happy to get the three-zero win.”
Dallas Soonias of Red Deer, Alta., registered 15 points for Canada while Nic Hoag of Sherbrooke, Que., added 10 points. Despite the sweep, head coach Glenn Hoag said the contest was a close one.
“First, we expected a very difficult match with China,” he said. “I think we were a little nervous, obviously our guys knew the points were important.
“We struggled a bit with our receive; not so much the setting off it, but trying to rotate the big servers. Also in the beginning, we lacked a bit of patience. For the rest of the game, I think our serving was better — Nic Hoag, Gord Perrin and Dallas Soonias — all three of them brought a lot from the serving line and that helped us quite a bit.”
Canada will play undefeated Russia in second-round play. The Russians defeated the Canadians in three sets in a first-round match last week.
