TORONTO — Receiver Joe West was named the CFL’s offensive player of the week after helping the Calgary Stampeders beat the Ottawa Redblacks just hours after learning his brother was murdered.

The 30-year-old West had four catches for 129 yards in Calgary’s 32-7 victory Sunday. He opted to play in Ottawa in memory of his 23-year-old brother, Brandon Hobdy, who had been shot and killed in Arkansas early that morning.

West, a third-year veteran, has 11 receptions this year for 268 yards, an impressive 24.4-yard average. West did not participate in the team’s rundown Tuesday at McMahon Stadium.

“From the bottom of my heart, I thank my teammates for their love and support at this difficult time,” West said in a statement released by the Stampeders.

“I also want to thank all the fans for their prayers and condolences. You’ll never know how much your kind words have meant to me.”

Stampeder head coach and general manager John Hufnagel said West might play Monday in the Labour Day game against the Edmonton Eskimos.

Edmonton linebacker Dexter McCoil captured top defensive player honours. He scored two TDs, registered two interceptions and five tackles in the Eskimos’ 41-27 home win over the Toronto Argonauts.

Edmonton defensive tackle Eddie Steele was named the top Canadian. The Winnipeg native had a sack, pass knockdown, six defensive tackles and another on special teams against Toronto.

For the second straight week, Tim Brown of the B.C. Lions was the top special-teams player. He had 277 combined return yards, including a 75-yard punt return TD, in a 20-16 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
