ST-EUSTACHE, Que. – Alex Labbe may have made six previous NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 appearances, but today at Autodrome St-Eustache is proving to be his coming out party.
With a track-record lap of 17.139 seconds (84.019), the 19-year-old Labbe took home his first pole in his series debut at an oval track. The St-Albert, Quebec, native backed up his performance from earlier in the day when he recorded the fastest laps across two practice sessions at the .4-mile oval.
Prior to Saturday’s National 250, Labbe had six Canadian Tire Series starts, all road course events. His best finish to-date was a fourth place effort at nearby Circuit ICAR earlier this month.
Defending series champion and National 250 winner Scott Steckly finished second in qualifying at 17.148 (83.980). J.R. Fitzpatrick (17.207/83.687) and Alex Guenette (17.286/83.304) will make up Row 2 in tonight’s 250-lap event.
Alex Tagliani, Noel Dowler, D.J. Kennington, Joey McColm, Andrew Ranger and Mark Dilley rounded out the top 10 qualifiers.
Kennington was the previous track record-holder. His mark, established in 2009, was 17.210 (83.672).
The National 250, the sixth event on the 2014 schedule, is set for green flag at 8 p.m.
