The Calgary Stampeders selected Pierre Lavertu first overall in the 2014 CFL Draft, just hours after acquiring the pick from the expansion Ottawa Redblacks in exchange for offensive lineman John Gott.
Watch the draft live NOW on TSN. Following the televised broadcast of the first round, TSN.ca and TSN GO have bonus live streaming coverage of the second to seventh rounds beginning at 8:15pm et/5:15pm pt.
Lavertu, a centre from Laval, was the third ranked prospect on the CFL Scouting Bureau list and was named a RSEQ Football All-Star all four years he was at Laval. He was also named a CIS First Team All-Canadian three times and helped the Rouge et Or to three Vanier Cups during his collegiate career.
The Redblacks sent the first overall pick and the rights to offensive lineman Marwan Hage to Calgary for Gott.
Gott, a 28-year-old Edmonton native, is a five-year veteran who started 14 of 16 games last season. Calgary selected Gott in the fifth round (35th overall) of the 2008 CFL Canadian Draft. He returned to Boise State for his final year of eligibility before signing with the Stampeders on May 8, 2009.
Ottawa will also reportedly receive a conditional pick if Calgary trades Hage's rights to another team.
With the second overall pick, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers kept it on the offensive line by selecting Matthias Goossen. The Simon Fraser product was ranked ninth by the CFL Scouting Bureau.
There was more movement at the third pick in the draft, with the Toronto Argonauts moving up to select Manitoba running back Anthony Coombs.
