Jeremy Roenick is worried Steven Stamkos is risking his long-term health by attempting to play in the Olympics.
“I get a little nervous,” Stamkos told Brady & Walker Tuesday on Sportsnet Fan 590 The Fan. “He’s taking a risk here with a team that’s really going to depend on him for the next 10 years. He’s still a young player. I get a little nervous if this is the right decision for Steven Stamkos.”
Roenick added that with the severity of Stamkos’ leg injury, he’s uncomfortable with the idea that the Canadian forward has had enough time to recover.
“He had a pretty major injury,” he said, referring to the broken tibia Stamkos suffered back on Nov.11. “Three months seems like a very quick recovery time to be going and putting as much pressure as he’s going to have on that.”
Roenick – a former U.S. Olympian – said he’s a huge fan of Stamkos and understands why any hockey player would want to want to represent their country at the Olympics, but added Stamkos’ priorities should be based around what’s best for his NHL team – the Tampa Bay Lightning – rather than what’s best for Canada.
“I’m of the belief that we need to be loyal to the team and those who pay us millions of dollars in order to perform,” Roenick explained. “ Is coming back after three months just so he can play in the Olympics worth it for Stamkos? Is it worth it for the Lightning? Does the owner have any say in that?
“Stamkos has a responsibility to his hockey team – the Tampa Bay Lightning – who looks like it has a very good chance for a good playoff seed and a good playoff run.”
The Lightning forward reportedly hopes to suit up Saturday when the Lightning take on the Detroit Red Wings.
