Sochi (Russia) (AFP) - Canada assistant coach Danielle Goyette doesn't believe there should be a mercy rule in women's Olympic hockey despite a series of embarrassing mismatches which once saw a game finish 82-0.
Canada beat Slovakia 18-0 four years ago in Vancouver, sparking calls to look at whether women's hockey belonged in the Olympics because too few nations take it seriously.
In the build up to the Vancouver Games, Slovakia beat Bulgaria 82-0 in the most one-sided game in the history of the International Ice Hockey Federation.
In an effort to try and limit the lopsided scores during the preliminary round in Sochi, organizers divided the eight teams into two groups with the top four seeds in Group A followed by the bottom four in Group B.
The bottom two Group A teams will play the top two Group B teams in the quarter-finals.
Goyette said Wednesday she doesn't believe in telling her players to stop scoring goals even if it resulted in more people questioning the sport.
"I would never be a coach to say we have to shut it down or we have to back off (scoring) because at the end of the day it could cost you the next game," Goyette said.
