SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. -- Patrick Watling scored the first of his two goals for Sault Ste. Marie during a four-goal first period, as the Greyhounds defeated the Saginaw Spirit 6-3 in Ontario Hockey League action Wednesday.
Sergey Tolchinsky, Trent Mallette and Bryan Moore also scored for the Greyhounds in the opening period. Moore's short-handed goal at 19:52 of the period made it 4-1.
Jared McCann scored in the second period for Sault Ste. Marie (34-11-5), and Watling got his second goal in the third period.
Cody Payne, Dylan Sadowy and Eric Locke replied for the Spirit (23-21-5). Locke's third-period goal was on a penalty shot.
Matt Murray made 42 saves for Sault Ste. Marie.
Jake Paterson allowed four goals on 20 shots in the opening period for Saginaw. Nikita Serebryakov went the rest of the way, allowing two goals on 22 shots.
