Season series: This is the first of two games between the Winnipeg Jets and Ottawa Senators. Ottawa took two of three last season.
Big story: The Jets and Senators each have lacked consistency all season, but the Jets are looking to win four straight for the first time since mid-November, and the Senators are after three straight wins for the first time since Nov. 5-9.
Team scope:
Jets: Winnipeg shutout Buffalo 3-0 Tuesday behind Al Montoya's 27 saves. It was the third-straight win for Montoya, who has allowed four goals in his past three starts.
"For me it's just about doing the right things in practice and working hard. Like I said earlier, the team is doing a great job in front of me," Montoya said. "Maybe I'm seeing the first shot but after that, clearing rebounds out, we're communicating well in the defensive zone, and we're putting together victories here right now."
Montoya went 5-0-0 and allowed five goals in six games (five starts) in December, and could take more playing time from starter Ondrej Pavelec.
"These things kind of go in cycles, and right now [Montoya] is riding a good cycle…But I'm not losing fact that Pavelec is a very good goalie," Jets coach Claude Noel said. "To me, one guy is playing well, and the other guy has hit a bump in the road, and that's the way it goes. It happens with all of the players."
Senators: Craig Anderson had 34 saves in a 3-1 win against the Washington Capitals on Monday, when the Senators won two games in a row for the first time in almost two months.
"It's one of those things where you have to keep looking forward. The next game is the next game. You got to look forward to that one now," Anderson said. "What we had in the last couple of games, we have to put that behind us and move forward, and keep climbing the ladder."
Ottawa killed off both power plays against a Washington team that has the second-best power-play percentage in the NHL.
"I think our penalty killing and our goaltender were a big part of our game," Senators coach Paul MacLean said. "But I also thought our team play throughout our lineup was very good."
Who's hot: Jets forward Blake Wheeler has 10 goals in 14 December games including three game-winning goals. Dustin Byfuglien had a three-game point-scoring streak snapped Tuesday, but has five points in six games. … Kyle Turris has three goals in five games for the Senators. Anderson has won three straight while stopping 90 of 94 shots, good for a .957 save percentage.
Injury report: Forwards Jim Slater (hernia) and Matt Halischuk (fractured forearm), and defensemen Paul Postma (blood clot, leg) and Grant Clitsome (undisclosed), are on injured reserve for the Jets. ... Senators defenseman Chris Phillips (foot) is probable, but center Jason Spezza (hip) is out. Forward Chris Neil (lower body) is out indefinitely.
