Like always, it's tough to predict the future and early forecasts showing favorable conditions for the Winter Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich., may not be so ideal after all. The town is expected to be hit with snow showers for the duration of the game between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs, which is set to drop the puck at 1 p.m. ET at Michigan Stadium.
A record crowd of more than 110,000 is expected to descend on The Big House for the game, but sight lines might get a bit of a shellacking from Mother Nature.
The forecast from Local 4 News in Detroit called for close to five inches of snow piling up by 7 p.m. ET in Ann Arbor. Temperatures should hover around 20 degrees, but there will be some wind making for even chillier temperatures. Weather.com is calling for a high of 18 in Ann Arbor.
There is also snow expected today in both Ann Arbor, where the Leafs and Red Wings will be practicing on the Big House Ice, and in Detroit, where the Hockeytown Winter Festival Alumni Showdown will be taking place at Comerica Park.
As always, the NHL has contingency plans in place for inclement weather. Sometimes that means pushing back the start time, though it doesn't look like that would be the best move at this point. They've played the Winter Classic in the snow before, but we'll have to see just how heavy it comes down in Ann Arbor.
The beauty of the outdoor games can also be its folly at times. Not much you can do about the weather, except to hope for the best.
